Special Webinar on Women's careers and how AI can support
Women in AI newsletter - special edition
The following are the words of Aleksejs Plotnikovs, a former long-term data leader at Microsoft:
"You are powerful, smart, ambitious, capable... woman. And yet, you find yourself stuck in your corporate career."
This is an all-too-common reality for many women in renowned and highly attractive companies. Just like the famous saying, "You join companies, but you leave managers," there's something to be said about how we develop our positioning, stance, and posture within any organization.
So, why are women more often negatively affected by this than men?
Throughout my career, Iβve noticed distinct patterns that highlight these differences β letβs take a closer look.
- Higher Sense of Responsibility and Conflict Avoidance.
Many women carry a heightened sense of responsibility, often taking on more than their fair share to ensure team success. However, this dedication sometimes comes with a tendency to avoid conflict, which can limit opportunities to voice opinions, negotiate roles, or challenge the status quo.
- Deep Focus, Consistency and Attention on Details.
Excelling in thorough work is a strength, yet it can also mean being less visible when it comes to high-profile projects or leadership roles that require stepping into the spotlight. The invaluable contributions made behind the scenes might not always receive the recognition they deserve.
- Quietly Overperforming Without Self-Promotion.
Constantly delivering exceptional results is praiseworthy, but without self-promotion or, better say, positioning, these achievements can go unnoticed. This humility, while virtuous, might unconsciously slow career progression. In large corporates only a few knows what others are doing, thatβs a fact.
What can be done for a better career, without compromising on authenticity?
